Surge Protection

Reduce Electrical Damage Risk from Power Surges

Power surges are a common and damaging electrical event β€” especially in Florida, where storms, utility switching, and hurricane-related outages regularly stress the electrical grid. While no system can guarantee protection from a direct lightning strike, professionally-installed surge protection can significantly reduce the risk of damage from everyday voltage spikes and nearby lightning activity.

At Spectrum WireWorks, we install whole-home surge protection and targeted protective solutions designed to limit surge-related damage to your home’s electrical system, appliances, and sensitive electronics.

Understanding Power Surges & Lighting Risk

A power surge is a sudden increase in electrical voltage that can damage or degrade electrical components over time. Surges commonly result from:

⚑ Nearby lightning strikes (not direct hits)

πŸŒ€ Utility grid switching and power restoration

πŸ”Œ Large appliances cycling on and off

πŸš— Downed lines or transformer issues

Direct lightning strikes involve extreme energy levels that exceed the capacity of any residential surge protection device. Surge protection is designed to manage typical and moderate surge events, not eliminate all risk.

Why Surge Protection Still Matters in Northeast Florida

Homes in Jacksonville and the First Coast are subject to:

  • Frequent thunderstorms and lightning activity

  • Power restoration surges after storms and outages

  • Utility switching events during peak demand

  • Neighborhoods with overhead power lines and mature trees

Most electrical damage occurs not from direct lightning strikes, but from secondary surges traveling through utility lines. Whole-home surge protection helps divert these excess voltages safely to ground, reducing cumulative damage over time.

Layered Protection for Sensitive Equipment

For high-value or sensitive electronics, we may recommend additional protective measures such as:

  • Dedicated surge protection devices installed at disconnects and subpanels for HVAC or pool equipment

  • UPS systems for medical devices or home offices

Layered protection improves outcomes but still cannot eliminate all risk during extreme events.

When Surge Protection is Strongly Recommended (or required by NEC)

  • Electrical panel replacements or service upgrades

  • Generator or EV charger installations

  • Pool, spa, or HVAC equipment upgrades

  • Home renovations or rewires

  • Homes with expensive electronics, audio equipment, or smart systems

When the risk is the cost of replacing a fried garage door opener, dishwasher, or other major appliance, surge protection is worth the investment.

Surge protection is now required by NEC code for all new residential builds and for panel changes. Surge protection can be added to most modern existing panels without necessitating a panel change.

🚨 SAFETY RECALL/FIRE HAZARD NOTICE 🚨

Certain models of Sycom/SUPCO surge protectors widely installed in homes across Jacksonville and the southeast between the late 1990s and approximately 2020 have had UL approval revoked due to increased risk of fires. These devices are typically installed behind the panel cover and are not visible to the homeowner. If you know or suspect that your home has one of these surge protectors installed, it should be removed and replaced with an approved surge protector immediately.
